Incoherent Insights: Our Things

The epistle reading for this Sunday tells the brief story of Tabitha (also known as Dorcas). She is described as a disciple “devoted to good works and acts of charity”. Upon her passing her community rushes to get the apostle Peter and bring him to her body where he eventually resurrects her. The part of the story I want to focus on is what happens when Peter arrived in the town of Joppa where Tabitha had lived. Upon his arrival the author of Acts tells us the widows who had been with Tabitha showed him all of the tunics and clothes that she had made while she was alive. I find it interesting that the way her grieving friends thought best to show who she was to Peter was by showing him the things she had made and given away. As if her own personality could be found woven into the fabrics of the her creations.

I think this is something everyone who has lost someone close to them can relate to. There are certain items we hold on to and relate with who are dearly departed was at their core. When my grandpa Ken passed away a number of years ago I would have picked out these blue button down work shirts he seemed to have 15 of , and the little plastic dinosaurs he would Velcro to the dash of the cars he drove. When you think about those who have passed on before you what objects come to mind for you? What do you think people would show of yours to demonstrate who you are?

Peace,

Corey
